Letter: Olden-days drive-in movie memories evoked

Dear Editor, Re: “Delta Drive-in was a family affair in 1950s,” Flashback Friday, April 1.

I really enjoyed your article on the Delta Drive-In a few weeks ago; it brought back some happy memories from childhood.

Growing up on Mitchell Island and attending Mitchell Elementary school, the drive-in was a part of our lives.

I remember going to a double feature of Ski Party and Country Music on Broadway, probably in 1966.

My brother and I enjoyed the first film then crawled into the back of the station wagon to sleep while my parents enjoyed the country music film.

My dad also took my brother and I to a triple bill of Hammer horror films that was great fun.

We played in the playground area until it was dark enough for the first movie to start.

I would always check out the cool sign at the entrance on the bus ride to school, and wish I had a photo of it now.

Above is a photo of my brother and I with some friends in front of Mitchell elementary in 1964, during construction on the expansion of the annex building.
