Letters: Richmond's bike lanes are being ignored by cyclists

A Richmond News reader was surprised to see a cyclist opting to ride next to a bike lane.

A Richmond News reader spotted cyclists choosing to ride on the road instead of the empty bike lanes.

Dear Editor,

The city is currently spending a considerable amount of money on constructing a beautiful new bike lane along Steveston Highway. A good section of it between No. 4 and Shell roads is now open.

I simply could not believe my eyes this past weekend when I saw a cyclist riding on the highway, right next to the new bike lane (completely empty at the time). To add insult to injury, he was holding up eastbound traffic for a considerable distance (almost to No. 3 Road) and was not wearing a helmet.

What was he thinking?  Why does the city bother to go to all this trouble and expense to build these wonderful bike lanes, only to have them blatantly ignored?

I have witnessed the same selfish, thoughtless behaviour on Railway Avenue, which has no less than four bike lanes, going north and south.

Unfortunately, the very culprits guilty of this are highly unlikely to read this letter, but even if it catches the attention of just one cyclist, it will be worth my rant.
