Letters: ‘White guy’ could offend

A Richmond News reader believes words describing people with distinction of colours may be considered offensive

Several people familiar with Cantonese told the Richmond News the word has evolved and isn’t as egregious as it might have been in the past, however, many people still urge caution and sensitivity given the diverse backgrounds of people living in Richmond and Canada.

Re: “Slur words evolve over time,” Letters, Feb. 3.

While R. Sham’s letter may have been founded on good intentions, the use of “white person, white guy and white dude” are distinctions of colour which in our current equality, diversity, inclusion environment might be considered offensive.
