Letters: Why are mega-mansions still going up on Richmond farmland?

Letter writer hopes large houses are being rented out.

No. 2 Road, south of Steveston Highway, has several "mega mansions" despite being the ALR.

Dear Editor,

You have to wonder why Richmond is allowing all these McMansions/hotels to be built (see No. 2 Road from Steveston Highway south) mostly on agricultural land that either house two to four people, or are totally empty, when this entire province is screaming for more housing and rental housing.

If these people building these monstrosities are currently renting out most of the house, I applaud you, but if not, why not?

I thought that the City of Richmond had passed a bylaw to limit the size of housing, but these enormous houses still seem to be going up and I do wonder why.

*Editor's note: The City of Richmond confirmed no new permits for homes larger than 400 square metres were issued after the bylaw was changed in 2018. There is no time limit on completion, but there must be construction activity within a six-month period.
