More than 4200 children participated this year in Richmond Public Library’s Kids’ Summer Reading Club.

As part of the Summer Reading Club each year, we encourage children to let us know what they think of the books they are reading by writing book reviews, and several reviews are chosen to be published in the Richmond News throughout the summer.  Here is a selection of reviews we’ve received.

Book title: Autumn Bird and the Runaway

Book author: Melanie Florence

Reviewed by: Isabella

Child age: 9

Book summary: This book is about Autumn and Cody. Cody escapes from home because he hates his dad getting angry and beating him up.

Book review: I like this book because it teaches people why some people sit on the streets and need a home like Cody. And in a million years, Autumn, a rich, popular kid could never imagine she’d be the one to help him.

Book title: Frizzy

Book author: Claribel A. Ortega

Reviewed by: Selena

Child age: 8

Book summary: Marlene wants to look beautiful like her cousin. But whenever she looks at herself, she thinks she looks gloomy, but she never told her mom how uncomfortable it felt and she only does it because her mom says she has to.

Book review: I like this book because it shows you how to be honest and you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to and even if other people think it’s gloomy, you can disagree.

Book title: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Book author: Rick Riordan

Reviewed by: Rio

Child age: 8

Book summary: Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood have to retrieve the ultimate Chalice of the Gods which has been stolen by Ganymede. While facing lots of problems they will try to complete the task …

Book review: I like this book because you get to learn Greek minor gods’ names and their elements. For example, Hebe the goddess of youth. But there was one tiny thing I didn’t like, it was that there was some French and I didn’t understand it.

Book title: The Painting

Book author: Charis Cotter

Reviewed by: Mariam

Child age: 11

Book summary: The book is about two girls that are connected by an old painting. They are both connected in some way to each other.

Book review: I like this book because it is easy to understand, and it’s long and full of mysteries. You learn more as you read. And start to connect the different situations like a puzzle. I LOVED this book and encourage others to read this! It’s perfect for ages 11 – 15!
