The Richmond Community Foundation awarded scholarships to 40 Richmond students pursuing post-secondary education.
A total of 49 scholarships with a combined total of $21,500 were handed to the student recipients.
More than 120 applications were received by the foundation -- a 50 per cent increase from last year.
Winners were selected based on their academic achievement, community involvement and their strength of references.
Among the winners are Braeden Munn, Kalia He and Ava Koldenhof.
Munn will pursue a degree in Linguistics and Arts at Douglas College and then at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and look to "give back to the community" after completing his education.
Meanwhile, Richmond secondary's He was awarded a pair of scholarships, which will support her in studying environmental sciences at UBC with hopes to pursue a career in environmental sustainability.
“Not only will these scholarships fund my school expenditures, but (they) will be lasting proof of the faith that Richmond’s community has in my future,” said He.
Koldenhof also received two scholarships, which will be used towards her studies in the Industrial Design program at the Université de Montréal.
Education unlocks opportunities, a fact understood by the fundholders of the Richmond Community Foundation, explained Ed Gavsie, executive director of the foundation.
“They’re committed to helping as many students as possible achieve their educational and professional goals.”
