Out and About: Sunshine brings out people on Steveston boardwalk

Walking or rolling in Richmond can be rewarded with a coffee.

On a sunny day - or even under adverse weather conditions - the Steveston boardwalk offers exercise with a purpose: the coffee shops and restaurants at the end of the stroll.

A wide variety of human and animal activity offers healthy outdoor exercise, photo opportunities and a pleasant set of benches to just sit and watch.

The walk starts in the historic area of ship building, net sheds and bunkhouses and then moves into the pleasant Village of Steveston.

On a sunny day, walkers, wheelchairs and cyclists respectfully share the walkway, with parts of it separated between walkers and bicycles.

A wide variety of sights enhance the water and mountain views.

My latest walks included views of the heritage ship, the Master, a miniature sailboat regatta, spontaneous acrobatics, workers on an elevated platform pressure washing a building, the National Geographic luxury cruise ship (in dock for a rare visit) and a large kite being flown over the Fraser River.

Plus dogs and owners getting their constitutionals, bicycle riders and a full range of walkers taking it all in.  All of this and a new – to me anyway – waterfront hotel.

Food also enters the experience.

If you start from the Chinese bunkhouse, you can walk far enough into Steveston to reward yourself with a pastry or sandwich at one of several indoor/outdoor coffee houses.

Parking nearby is easy and the vibe is peaceful.
