More than 1,000 runners young and old took over the Steveston Village boardwalk in an annual, record-breaking run event this month.
The Steveston Icebreaker 8K run -- one of the major fundraisers for the Kajaks Track and Field Club -- was held along the Steveston Village boardwalk and dike trail on Jan. 12.
The race raised more than $20,000 to benefit KidSport Richmond, which financially helps Richmond kids aged 18 and under whose families can't afford to pay sport registration fees.
The Icebreaker 8K had 991 finishers, and the mini 2.5K Icebreaker and Kidsrun both had 100 kids cross the finish line.
Local elite athlete Samantha Jory was the top female for the second year straight.
Trinity Western University varsity athlete Yemane Mulugeta was the top male, finishing the course at 24 minutes, just 10 seconds shy of the course record.
Jared Hulme, race director of Icebreaker 8K, said the day could not have been any better with perfect weather and a "stunning sunrise" on the Steveston waterfront.
Hulme has been the race director for a decade, starting when there were fewer than 200 runners at the event.
"It's just wild thinking of it. It is truly awesome to see how the Richmond community has supported this event and made it one of the marque races on the Lower Mainland Road Race Series in the province," he said.
"I share with the planning committee each year, that it is very cool that we get to help people achieve their fitness goals while raising money for important causes like KidSport Richmond."
This was the third year in a row whereby the race sold out.
This year's race was record breaking, said Jeremy Hopwood, Kajaks Track and Field Club president.
"It was fantastic to see so many participants achieving their goals on a beautiful Sunday morning in Steveston," said Hopwood.
"A big thank you to all of the volunteers, partners and sponsors who helped make this event a success and generate funds for KidSport and the Kajaks Track and Field Club."
