The lead-up to the Year of the Snake at Aberdeen Centre was celebrated by music and dance – both traditional and modern – a fashion show, a lion dance, an appearance from the God of Wealth and, of course, the countdown to the new year.
Fairchild Radio held its annual Lunar New Year celebration at the Richmond mall on Tuesday evening, ringing in the Chinese New Year which began Wednesday (Jan. 29).
There were more than 80 locals who performed onstage in the main atrium of Aberdeen Centre.
One of the performances was by the Cindy Yang Dance Academy of Canada, which “set a graceful tone for the festivities with a dance that embodied the wishes of good fortune and prosperity,” host Fairchild Radio said in a press release.
This was followed by a performance by Flying Dance Studio.
The latter, a Korean street dance, as well as the Cindy Yang Dance Academy performance “brought the audience on a cultural journey, showcasing the multicultural heart of Canada,” said Fairchild Radio.
A fashion show by the 2024 Little Sunshine contestants was “one of the night’s most memorable moments,” according to Fairchild, where eight performers “flaunted chic outfits with elegance and confidence.”
A lion dance performance by CLF Kung Fu Club was accompanied by the sound of gongs and drums.
Chef Alex took to the stage to demonstrate a contemporary Chinese New Year dish, pan-seared bacon wrap pork tenderloin served on warm bacon potato salad and TruNatural pork jus.
Assisting him onstage was Shania Fu, Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2024 champion.
Finally at midnight, the hosts, performers, and members of all three levels of government led the crowd in a countdown to usher in the Year of the Snake. This was followed by the God of Wealth distributing red envelopes, which symbolize good fortune and prosperity.
