A Richmond student was recently recognized for overcoming adversity and excelling at school.
Joyann Rui-Yue Hua will receive a $45,000 post-secondary scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Science at UBC as one of this year's 20 Cmolik Foundation scholarship winners.
"The Selection Committee was impressed with Joyann’s application, her academic goals and her future career aspirations," reads Cmolik Foundation's media release.
Hua is a student at the Transition Program for Gifted Students, a two-year program that enrols 20 students between 13 to 15 years old each year to prepare them for early entry to university.
She is hoping to major in computer science at UBC.
"I have always been interested in the inner workings of these technologies we use in our daily lives, and studying computer science would give me the opportunity to be at the forefront of new developments in the field, and positively affect the lives of people around the world," said Hua.
Founded in 2008, the Cmolik Foundation provides opportunities for youth who have experienced adversity through scholarships, mentorship, field trips and summer camps. Its scholarship program currently supports 100 students.
The program, run by B.C.'s Ministry of Education, Vancouver School Board and UBC, is currently undergoing formal review following concerns about students' mental health. Intake for 2024 to 2025 is on pause.
