An award-winning author and artist is talking about mental health recovery at the Richmond Public Library on Thursday evening.
Sandra Yuen MacKay is sharing her journey with mental illness and recovery at RPL’s Brighouse branch author talk from 7 to 8 p.m. on June 8.
MacKay is hoping to share the message that “mental health recovery is possible” with the right people and care and she shares just this through her memoir titled “My Schizophrenic Life: The Road to Recovery from Mental Illness.”
While she was diagnosed with a mental illness at 15 years old, her family thought she “could still have a normal life,” explained MacKay.
“I found that my family support was really crucial to me having success in every aspect of my life,” she said.
“What really brought me peace was just connecting with who I was and finding out I did not need outside approval. It was about developing my self-esteem and finding myself as a person.”
MacKay will also highlight and share tips on how community members can share their own stories whether it be through art, poetry or writing.
