Richmond's Gateway Theatre is celebrating its fourth decade of storytelling and performing arts.

Since opening in 1984, the theatre has been a hub for plays, musicals and educational opportunities for young artists.

To mark its 40th anniversary, Gateway is hosting a storytelling showcase as well as a fundraising gala and silent auction event on March 8.

"Gateway Theatre has been an integral part of Richmond’s cultural landscape for 40 years, providing a space where stories are shared, voices are heard and creativity flourishes,” said Barbara Tomasic, Gateway Theatre’s artistic executive director.

“This anniversary is not just about celebrating our history—it’s about looking ahead to an exciting future of theatre in our community.”

The anniversary storytelling showcase, The Flame: Anniversary Edition, will feature real-life stories told by award-winning actor Deborah Williams, who is also one of the creators of Mom's the Word.

The Flame is a monthly live storytelling event that started out of Williams' east Vancouver home living room in 2009 where people share a personal true story to each other.

Williams will share her own personal stories with themes of birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations on March 8 at 2:30 p.m.

The audience can expect laughter and nostalgia from this show while connecting with the community through the arts.

Later that evening, Gateway Theatre will be having its 40th anniversary Ruby Reflections gala.

The event will celebrate Gateway's history of inspiring stories, artistic excellence and community connection with another special edition of The Flame storytelling featuring stories and songs by former performers Josh Epstein, Jason Sakaki, Tiana Jung, Beverley Elliot, Tomasic and more.

Proceeds from the gala and silent auction will support Gateway's programs for emerging artists and the launch of the Gateway Theatre Artistic Development program.

“As we celebrate 40 years, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of Gateway’s journey—our artists, audiences, volunteers and donors," said Tomasic.

"Four decades of passion and support have allowed us to thrive, and we look forward to the next chapter of storytelling at Gateway."
