Fisherman reels in dream catch

A Steveston fisherman has seven million reasons to be happy -- and, for once, it has nothing to do with salmon.

Van Hen Lu, who lives in Vancouver but whose boat is docked in Richmond, was the lucky winner of last week's Lotto 6/49 $7.2 million jackpot.

Lu bought his winning ticket at the Petro Canada gas station on Steveston Highway. He and his wife, Thieu Mai Ly, are now wondering how to spend their $7.2 million.

"My wife and I checked our Lotto 6/49 tickets this morning," said Lu on Friday, as he received his cheque at BCLC's Vancouver office.

"I still can't believe it. We put the ticket in the machine three times just to be sure. We both started dancing."

Lu matched all six of his regularly played numbers on the Aug. 17 Lotto 6/49 draw to win the jackpot.

"We rushed home to tell the kids," said Ly. "I screamed at everyone to wake up. It's so exciting. It is our son's birthday and he doesn't know yet."

The family plans on buying a new house and Lu plans to "buy a nice, new motor for my fishing boat."

The winning ticket is the first of two jackpots won in Richmond in the last two weeks. A second $7 million winning ticket sold in Richmond for the Aug. 3 draw remains unclaimed.
