With only one day that didn’t see rain or snow and over 250 mm of precipitation, this past January is one of the wettest on record at YVR over the past eight decades.
According to the airport’s weather monitoring station, which has data from 1937 to today — published by Environment Canada — 15 Januarys saw over 200 mm of rain, with the highest amount of rainfall recorded in 2006.
Last month, YVR saw 256.6 mm of precipitation, with 226 mm of rain over 26 days, and 34.6 mm of snow over four days — with a mix of both on some days. Only Jan. 9 had no precipitation whatsoever.
The month ended with a rainfall warning for much of Metro Vancouver, including Richmond, with some areas expected to receive between 100 to 120 mm of rain.
In Jan. 2006 YVR saw 283.6 mm of rain, the highest on record. That month, except for Jan. 15 and Jan. 24, it rained every day, according to the data.
Other years with high amounts of rainfall are 1958, with 260.6 mm, 1992, with 281.8 mm, and 2018, with 249.4 mm.
