One person charged in Steveston boat fire

Cause of the boat fire could not be determined

A person has been charged following a boat fire near Steveston's Garry Point Park on Thursday afternoon.

Richmond RCMP and Richmond Fire-Rescue were called to a small boat fire just before 2:20 p.m. on Aug. 15 just off the south point of Garry Point Park.

Two individuals onboard the boat had jumped into the water when the fire erupted, according to Grant Wyenberg, assistant deputy chief at Richmond Fire-Rescue.

They were helped out of the water by the Steveston Harbour Authority shortly after they had jumped.

"During the course of the investigation, the boat operator was arrested for impaired operation of a vessel," said Cpl. Adriana O'Malley, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP.

The operator has since been released on a police undertaking, with charges pending further investigation, she added.

Richmond Fire-Rescue's Wyenberg said the cause of the fire could not be determined as the boat capsized.

The Canadian Coast Guard has been called to help remove the boat from the water.
