A 75-year-old Ontario man was arrested and charged after the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) allegedly discovered prohibited weapons arriving through the Vancouver International Mail Centre in Richmond.

Following a month-long investigation, charges have been laid against Thomas C. Mitchell of St. Catharines, Ont.

Mitchell was arrested and charged with nine counts of firearms-related offences in addition to smuggling, possession and evading compliance charges under the Customs Act.

The investigation began when the CBSA allegedly discovered the prohibited weapons while processing and examining international mail on Oct. 6.

This prompted a joint investigation between the CBSA, Niagara police and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)’s Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit.

A search warrant was executed by the Niagara police, the OPP and the CBSA near St. Paul Street West and McDonald Street in St. Catharines, Ont. on Nov. 3.

Mitchell was released and is expected to appear in court on Jan. 12 in St. Catharines.
