Rally against carbon tax increase planned in Richmond

A municipal political party is calling on provincial and federal governments to freeze fuel taxes.

Lineups get long at Richmond gas stations when prices dip. The carbon tax increase on Monday will add another three cents per litre to the price of fuel.

A rally is planned for Monday afternoon in Richmond to protest against the carbon tax hike.

Richmond Community Coalition (RCC), the municipal political party that Richmond city Coun. Chak Au belongs to, is taking part in a rally on April 1 at Minoru Park.

In a press release, put out by former RCC city council candidate Sheldon Starrett, the political group says it “stands with Richmond residents (who) are feeling burdened by the increase in federal and provincial taxes today.”

The carbon tax is going up by three cents on most fuel types on Monday, April 1, from about 14 cents per litre to about 17 cents per litre.

Organizers say the rally is to express "opposition to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s and Premier David Eby’s imposition of carbon tax increases.”

"The carbon tax will trickle down and significantly impact the cost of food and other daily necessities that residents will need to purchase and provide for their families," reads the press release.

The federal carbon tax, however, doesn’t apply to B.C. since this province has had its own carbon tax since 2008, implemented by the then-BC Liberal government.

Carbon tax is considered a price on pollution that encourages lower usage of fossil fuels.

The federal opposition Conservatives are holding rallies across Canada on Monday to oppose a federal increase to the carbon tax that applies to provinces that don’t have their own carbon tax.
