Get active with the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, the nationwide initiative that encourages communities to be physically active throughout the month of June.

The City of Richmond is aiming for the top in a national challenge to support local sports and physical activities.

Throughout June, everyone is invited to try out more than 65 free or low-cost activities open to all ages around the city as part of the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

The city won the title of "British Columbia's Most Active Community" in 2022 and placed among the top 50 finalists in Canada in 2023.

This year, it hopes to go "one better" by aiming for the ultimate title — "Canada's Most Active Community."

The city will kick off the challenge on Sunday, June 2 with a family-friendly event at the Clement Track and Minoru Plaza at 7191 Granville Avenue.

The event will start with a warm-up walk around the track led by Mayor Malcolm Brodie, followed by an all-ages dance party on the plaza. A prize will be given to the first 100 attendees.

Free or low-cost activities will include a public art scavenger hunt in city centre, walking soccer at South Arm Community Centre, a Nordic poling workshop at the Minoru Centre for Active Living and a fun run at the Cambie Community Centre.

Community members can also participate in the challenge by signing up and taking the pledge to be active on the participaction.com,and participate in ParticipACTION challenges through the Optimity app during the month of June.

As well, Richmond-based organizations, community groups and businesses are welcome to register and track organized physical activity programs and events delivered between June 1 and 30 on participaction.com.

Weekly prizes will be available for participants.
