Richmond J.N. Burnett students will be performing with another band visiting from Australia.

High school bands from Richmond and Australia are collaborating for the first time in a joint performance on Tuesday evening.

J.N. Burnett and St. Peters Lutheran College bands will perform multiple songs together on Dec. 19 including the premiere of Sweet Melodies of Christmas Past, a composition by guest conductor John Hudson.

Carina Cheng, spokesperson for the Burnett Music Council, described this as a unique occasion and an incredible opportunity for Burnett students.

"This concert not only allows Burnett students to meet new people but also provides a window of opportunity for the entire community to explore different cultures and make unforgettable memories," said Cheng.

She added that the school has previously held joint performances with Steveston-London secondary, but this is the first time the band will perform with another school outside of Canada.

When asked how the two schools connected, Cheng explained it was because of the adult community bands.

"We were connected to them when adult community bands reached out to us since we were still in session and the adult bands had already ended for the season."

The concert will be held at J.N. Burnett secondary at 5011 Granville Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 19.
