A Richmond animal shelter is offering to take in cats that are being evacuated due to the ongoing wildfires.

A state of emergency was declared in the City of Kelowna on Thursday as the McDougall Creek fire grew six times in size overnight.

The Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS), which operates the cat sanctuary on No. 5 Road, says the sanctuary has space for cats that need to be evacuated.

“For those who need safe, immediate and experienced shelter for their cats, we are here,” said Eyal Lichtmann, CEO and executive director of the Regional Animal Protection Society.

“Knowing that companion animals are safe and cared for will allow families a little peace of mind during this time of stress.”
