A Richmond hairstylist is representing Canada as a finalist for a U.K.-based hair award in London this December.
Ken Hung, owner of Salon Era in Richmond, is one of five top hair stylists around the world to be nominated for the Fellowship Hair Award in the International Images of the Year category.
“It felt really good to receive a call to tell us we got nominated,” said Hung, who opened Salon Era seven and a half years ago.
“After six months of hard work ... and getting recognized by the professional judges, especially internationally, is something we are proud of.”
His hair collection for the international award, Hung explained, has to check off several requirements including beautiful, trendy and fashion-forward.
“Judges will also look at the overall collection like a fashion magazine so the model, clothing and fashion are taken into account as well.”
Hung has been submitting collections for competitions and awards since 2010 and always look forward to “pushing the boundary and the art of hairstyling” in the 23 years of being in the industry.
“I like doing precision work and hairstyling being a high-detail craftsman work can be fulfilling,” he said.
“You can make people change, and when you see the happiness on their face ... that kind of feeling you can’t describe except that you know you did a great job.”
Hung’s collection will be up against Matjaz Cej from Slovenia, Richmond Long from Ireland, Danny Pato from New Zealand and Rachel White from Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Hung was also nominated for the Contessa Hair Award, one of Canada’s biggest hair awards. His hair collection entry was nominated for four categories.
Hung will be attending the national award gala in Toronto on Nov. 20.
