The Richmond RCMP ball hockey team may not have won the Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer Ball hockey tournament, but they did raise almost $11,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
The team made up of officers from the Richmond RCMP Detachment, their family members and friends was organized by an officer who had lost a family member to cancer.
In an email sent to the detachment, encouraging everyone to donate, the officer wrote: Im playing for those that are too sick to play and require the proper treatment, so that they too can one day play for themselves and someone else.
Im playing so that my efforts will make a truly impactful difference in the Canadian Cancer Societys world class research efforts, all striving towards one ultimate vision: conquer cancer in our lifetime.
Each team member was responsible for collecting donations and several fundraising events were hosted by the team in the months that led up to the tournament.
Five games of road hockey were played in the dawn-to-dusk event held Oct. 13, which saw the RCMP team finishing with two wins, two losses and a tie.
