The Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) issued 801 traffic tickets in October and impounded two cars for excessive speeding.
On Oct. 11, RCMP caught a BMW M5 travelling at 159 km/h on Westminster Highway – cutting off a semi-truck in the process.
The driver was issued a $483 fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h and another $368 fine for driving without care. Six demerit points were handed out and the car was impounded for a minimum of seven days.
On Oct. 20, officers stopped another speeding vehicle, this time travelling at 143 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on Highway 91. A speeding ticket was issued and the vehicle was also impounded for a minimum of seven days.
An HOV enforcement operation took place on Oct. 18 at Grant McConachie Way – northbound toward the Arthur Laing Bridge. RCMP gave out 26 tickets for a total of 34 charges during the two-hour operation.
Of the total 801 traffic tickets, 207 were vehicle-related infractions, 163 were for speeding and 127 were driver licence infractions.
Sixty traffic tickets were given that month for distracted driving and 26 were issued for impaired drug/alcohol infractions.
According to an RCMP release, ICBC data shows nearly half of all crashes involving pedestrians take place from October to January, increasing the need for awareness.
For community engagement, Const. Vander Helm and Cpl. Somerville of the Road Safety Unit attended a Blood Donor Clinic on Oct. 25 to donate blood. This was Vander Helm’s 14th donation and Somerville’s 144th donation.
As the rainy season commences, Richmond RCMP Sgt. Eric Baskette urged drivers to drive with caution, adjust their speed and always yield to pedestrians.
