Richmond RCMP and Metro Vancouver Transit Police made 11 alleged theft arrests on Dec. 13.

A joint operation between the city's RCMP crime unit, transit police and local businesses focused on shoplifters targeting Richmond businesses.

"Half of those arrested were from other jurisdictions and have allegedly committed similar offences in other jurisdictions," said Cpl. Adriana O'Malley, media relations officer with the Richmond RCMP, in a media release.

While most of the arrests were for alleged thefts, a man and woman were caught for allegedly attempting to use a "fraudulently obtained gift card" to buy items from a store.

Sgt. Russel Yugai, with the Richmond Investigate Services, said thieves either steal for their own needs or are part of a group.

"While some offenders steal for personal reasons, we know that others are part of a more organized group that has been given a list of specific items they are supposed to steal," said Yugai.

"Whatever their reason, shoplifting can have a significant impact on a business, including finances, which ultimately affects the consumer. By focusing on these offenders, we are protecting our community as a whole."

During the operation, RCMP also used a bait bike, but "no attempts were made to steal it."

The police's property crime unit will also be working throughout the holiday season.
