The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market, which was set to begin next month, has been cancelled due to COVID-19.
This would have been the 12th year that the market has operated in Steveston, where numerous vendors and members of the community meet, sell and purchase locally-crafted and grown product.
“The decision was not an easy one as this will affect many vendors, artists, staff and volunteers that make the market successful each year,” said Alan Sakai, chair of the Steveston Farmers Market Committee.
The decision to cancel the market was made earlier this week by unanimous vote. Sakai – who is also president of the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial society – said it was “the most responsible decision” given current circumstances and protocols put in place by health officials.
The first market of the year was scheduled for May 10.
The farmers market is run by a volunteer committee under the agricultural and industrial society and Steveston Community Society.
The committee is currently looking at how to support and connect vendors with the community through other ways.
