The flag of Ukraine will be raised at Richmond City Hall.

The flag of Ukraine will be hoisted on No. 3 Road outside Richmond City Hall.

A motion to do so – and to send a letter of support to the Ukrainian consul-general in Vancouver – in the wake of Russia attacking Ukraine last week, was passed unanimously by Richmond city council on Monday evening.

Not only would it show support for Ukraine in these “terrible and tragic events,” it would support people of Ukrainian descent locally, said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“There’s not a lot a municipal government halfway around the world can do, but I think that we can indicate our support and make it known where we stand as a group,” Brodie said.

Because of COVID-19, not many are people coming to city hall, so the flagpoles on the plaza aren’t as prominent, he explained.

Russia attacked Ukraine last week and several cities have been hit by heavy fighting. Thousands of refugees are fleeing into neighbouring Poland and other countries.

Coun. Carol Day pointed out the federal government is matching donations to the Red Cross to help Ukrainians up to $10 million.

Earlier Monday, the Russian flag was taken down at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
