The City of Richmond said the dead seal has now been removed from the beach at the Garry Point Park, but its origin or cause of death remains unknown.
Stacy Song, who was visiting the park Monday afternoon, saw a seal’s cadaver deposited on a beach over on the west side of the Fisherman’s Memorial Monument around 3 p.m.
“Looks like it didn’t just die today, but I think it died not too long ago,” Song told the Richmond News.
“It had a slight odor, but it was not very strong. There was no sign, and not many people noticed it – perhaps they thought it was a piece of wood.
“I’m worried it will smell if no one takes care of it. We should respect animals, and give it a burial place,” said Song.
It was not apparent how the seal died.
Steveston Harbour Authority told the News Monday the beach where the body was found is not in its jurisdiction, since Garry Point Park is the City of Richmond’s property.
