Not too many people carry cash or coins these days but one traveller passing through Vancouver International Airport recently is sure glad he did.

Jianping Fu’s spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a Lotto 6/49 ticket with some extra toonies at a YVR lottery kiosk, en route to his Ontario home, proved lucrative indeed when he scooped $1 million from the June 7 draw.

Fu, who had been visiting the west coast from Vaughan, said he was “trying to clear out my wallet [when I got home] and took out the lottery tickets from my trip.

“I searched the winning numbers online and noticed I had matched the Gold Ball numbers. I downloaded the BCLC Lotto! App shortly after to confirm I actually won!”

Fu said his wife didn’t believe him when he told her, but now the couple is mortgage-free and is making travel plans he could only dream of.

“It’s a big relief financially! I never thought I could win this big and I’m very excited,” he said.
