It was a pair of podium finishes for Air Attack teams close to home at Volleyball B.C.’s U17 and U18 Provincial Championships, held last weekend at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The Richmond club’s U18 Gold boys squad was crowned Division Two champions after a straight set win (25-18, 34-32) over the Prince George Kodiaks Black team. Air Attack had defeated BCO Black (25-19, 25-8) in the semi-finals to advance.
The team includes: AJ Balbeuna, Lucas Bennett, Kyle Buhrig, Nicholas Bui, Jared Choy, Emerson Cooke Sean Hou, Kevin Hu, Adam Kartusch, Andrey Karsnoperov and Ben Truong.
Meanwhile, it was a silver medal finish for Air Attack Gold in U18 Girls Division Three play. The final saw the locals fall to Victoria Red (23-25, 22-25) in a pair of tightly-contested games. Earlier, Air Attack advanced to the championship match by defeating BCO Red 25-20, 25-15.
The roster features: Athena Chen, Hannah Collins, Kate Dee, Sarah Lee, Chloe Matthews, Madeline Matthews, Ysabel Portugal, Renee Tang and Jennifer Vonas.
In U17/U18 Boys Division One play, U17 Air Attack Gold showed their promise by reaching the quarter-finals where they just came up short in a highly-entertaining three-set loss (27-25, 22-25, 13-15) to Lake Country. The boys went on to place sixth, defeating U17 Fraser Valley (25-18, 25-20), then falling to Kodiaks Red (21-25, 22-25).
