Kids and families lined up at Richmond’s Golf Town to meet and greet professional Canadian golfer Brooke Henderson on Monday afternoon.
Henderson, who is currently the sixth-ranked professional female player in the world, was in the city for the “Brooke Brigade” event, just a day after finishing a solid 12th in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
“Whether I’m on or off the course, it means a lot to have their support and I hope to inspire them as they inspire me,” said Henderson, adding she is grateful to the young girls, boys and families at Bridgeport’s Golf Town.
Twelve-year-old Ella was the first in line with her family at the Richmond event to meet Henderson.
Ella, a young golfer, said she couldn’t be more excited to meet the professional golfer and give her words of encouragement.
“I hope to tell her she did good at her tournament yesterday (Sunday),” said Ella.
The sport has its barriers, but females have been “pushing boundaries” in life and on the course, according to Henderson.
“We’re trying to bring the game to the next level, trying to get closer to the pay the men are getting and getting to play the better courses the men get to play,” she said.
“It’s always a battle but I feel like we are winning right now, and we just got to keep going.”
Henderson is reminding young, aspiring female golfers to remember to have fun while on the golf course.
“It’s cliché but it’s really just about having fun. Find a group of people that you like hanging out with and go on the course together.”
