Richmond Roadrunners will looking to thrive in an underdog role against regular season champion Victoria Shamrocks in an opening round series that starts Saturday. Game two is Sunday at Minoru.

Given the start to their season, a playoff spot for their inaugural season in the B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League is no small feat for the Richmond Roadrunners.

After losing seven of eight games to begin the 2018 campaign, the Roadrunners bounced back to do just enough earn the eighth and final spot with a 5-13-0 record. That sets up a best-of-three series with the first place Victoria Shamrocks (14-3-1), starting Saturday afternoon in the provincial capital. The teams then head to Minoru Arenas for game two on Sunday at 4 p.m.

While the series looks like a mismatch on paper, the Roadrunners did give the high-flying Shamrocks all they could handle back in late May — a 14-13 loss in Victoria.

Richmond closed out its regular season schedule with a tough 10-8 overtime setback to the Delta Islanders last week.

The visitors outscored the Roadrunners 2-0 in the 10-minute extra period.

Ryan Jensen led the locals with five points, including a pair of goals. The University of Regina bound football player led his team in scoring with 58 points in just 12 games. He also scored as a call-up player for the Delta Junior “A” Islanders last Saturday in their win over Langley.

Cade Blouin added a hat trick in the season finale while Jordan Roberts scored twice.

Richmond was playing without second leading scorer and captain Josh Bourne.
