Seven Richmond teams remain in Coastal Cup hunt

Richmond Gunners prevailed 2-0 in extra time over South Delta in a Coastal Cup round of 16 showdown between the top two teams in B.C. Coastal Soccer League's U18 Division.

Seven Richmond teams remain in the title hunt as B.C. Soccer’s Coastal Cup playdowns move into the quarter-final stage this weekend.

In “A” Cup action, a pair of Richmond United boys teams reached the final eight with round of 16 victories.

U15 United produced a 3-1 road win over the West Vancouver Rangers and now take on Vancouver F.C. in another away match.

U13 United has also moved on with a 2-1 victory against Vancouver F.C. The boys will now head to Port Moody on Saturday to take on the Selects.

On the girls “A” side, U17 Richmond F.C. and the U14 Strikers will see their first action of the championships after opening round byes.

The Strikers will host CCB Elite at 3 p.m. at Hugh Boyd. They already have a Provincial Cup berth locked up thanks to a first place finish in Metro Selects League play.

That game will be followed by Richmond F.C. taking on the Coquitlam Metro Ford Shock at 5 p.m. The girls are the defending Coastal and Provincial Cup champions at the U16 level.

On the “B” side of boys cup play, the Richmond Gunners are through to the quarter-finals after a huge 2-0 win over South Delta United. The match featured the top two teams in the B.C. Coastal Soccer League's U18 Division thanks to the random draw format.

The Gunners dodged some bullets in the first half with a saved penalty, disallowed goal and another South Delta chance rattling off the crossbar. Richmond had a better final 45 minutes then struck twice in the second half of extra time.

The boys will now take on the Vancouver Island champions this weekend.

In U15 play, Richmond rolled to a 5-0 win over Surrey United in an all-Rangers battle. The boys will take on Guildford this weekend.

In girls “B” cup play, the U17 Richmond Selects produced an impressive 4-0 win over SurDel. The girls also head to the Island to take on the Comox Thunder in the final eight.

An outstanding season came to a sudden end for U18 Richmond F.C. after a 1-0 upset loss to the Alouette All-Blacks in Maple Ridge.

Richmond had steamrolled through B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League play without a loss (10-0-1) and also the top flight of league cup play with four straight wins.
