The McRoberts Strikers are three-time Richmond senior girls volleyball champions — capping a dominant run in city play with a straight set home court win over the McMath Wildcats on Wednesday night.
McRoberts entered the eight team tournament as the heavy favourite after going 10-0 in regular season play and winning 30 consecutive sets in the process. They did see that streak stopped in their semi-final win over Richmond Christian but were still in control from start to finish. The Wildcats flirted with a game three victory thanks to a nice comeback but the hosts still prevailed 26-24 to seal the title.
Both schools could very well meet again next week in the very same gym when McRoberts hosts the inaugural South Fraser AAA Zone Championships. The six-team team event also features the Steveston-London Sharks, Ladner’s Delta Pacers and a pair of Surrey schools — Salish and Clayton Heights.
The Strikers receive a bye to next Wednesday night’s semi-finals while the Wildcats and the Sharks take on Clayton Heights and Salish respectively in quarter-final play. The Pacers also advanced directly to the semis. The title game goes next Thursday at 8 p.m.
The Strikers are the lone team to appear in the provincial AAA rankings this season — currently occupying the No. 8 spot.
Meanwhile, Richmond Christian, Cambie and MacNeill are in Surrey next week for the South Fraser AA Championships. That tournament also concludes next Thursday at Pacific Academy.
