A letter writer asks for a compromise vis-a-vis the Steveston Hotel.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Architect begs to have heritage status removed from Steveston Hotel"

As a former heritage commissioner volunteer with the City of Richmond's Heritage Committee and a licensed commercial real estate agent, I try to understand both the desire to preserve historical sites and the need for property owners to maintain profitable, functional buildings.

I'd hate to see this property deteriorate or remain underutilized.

Perhaps we could find a middle ground by constructing a modern building that still reflects the hotel's heritage.

For example, the lower levels could recreate the original façade, retaining the charm of its historic appearance, while stepping back on higher floors to meet modern demands.

Yes, this might cost a bit more initially, but it could offer a win-win solution that preserves the district's character and provides the owner with a thriving business.

In the end, a well-designed development that honours the past while addressing present needs can truly revitalize the entire block.
