Letters: It would be a 'sin' to paint over Steveston mural

A Richmond News reader wants input from the arts community and historical society as to the fate of a mural on the Steveston Hotel.

The mural on the side of the Steveston Hotel has been deteriorating and will be removed and possibly painted elsewhere in the future.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Steveston mural to be painted over, possibly relocated"

I watched as the mural was painted on the wall of the Steveson Hotel.

It is a fine piece of artwork and by far the best marine mural in Steveston.

To paint over it would be a sin and a loss. It is a major tourist attraction in full view from the Cannery.

Painting directly onto a concrete wall is a challenge when it comes to long-term preservation.

The existing mural is weathered but still a tribute to Steveston’s long history as a fishing port.

The mural could be reproduced on weather-proof panels and installed to cover up the existing mural.

This is not a matter for Richmond City Hall to decide. It requires input from the arts community as well as the historical society.
