Letters: Snow plow messes up sidewalk maintained by Richmond strata

A letter writer was frustrated when snow plows dumped more snow onto their sidewalk after the strata had already shovelled it.

Dear Editor,

The recent heavy snowfall has emphasized the need for a wider and better-placed sidewalk on the west side of Cooney Road between Cook and Westminster Highway.

Many people use the sidewalk, which runs adjacent to the road and is extremely narrow in spots, to get to many places in central Richmond such as the Public Market, Brighouse Station, Service Canada Centre, shopping and many others places.

Residents along that stretch of road do their best to keep the sidewalks clear by repeatedly shovelling snow only to have their efforts spoiled by speeding snowplows that eject heavy slush onto them.

This is extremely frustrating.

We are a small strata and many of us are elderly. We just don't have the human resources to remove that type of heavy slush.

The sidewalks are just as important as the streets and it's time the city took a greater responsibility in clearing them, particularly in the downtown area where many prefer to walk than drive to get to their destination.
