GoFundMe, the popular crowd-funding website, has donated $1,000 to help boost the campaign of 11-year-old John Zhuang Chen, who is recovering from a devastating flesh-eating disease.

The website’s donation was one of 75 similar ones across the country in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday.

GoFundMe picked out 75 impactful campaigns started by Canadians and John’s campaign was chosen as one of the recipients.

More than $35,000 of $150,000 goal raised so far for John, whose family is looking to the United States where there are trials for muscle implants.

For that, they are fundraising, which should also help offset the costs of both parents not working.

The Richmond News reported in June how, after an initial visit to the local clinic resulted in an order for bed rest and some ibuprofen, John found himself surrounded by doctors at BC Children’s Hospital, soon to be diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis (or flesh-eating disease).

The disease attacked his tendons and skin, which has resulted in nearly two dozen surgeries that have left him without a right calf and left tricep muscles and limited muscle mass in his other limbs.
