2019 is the International Year of the Salmon and the Gulf of Georgia is celebrating this iconic west coast fish on Saturday, Nov. 9 with a free, family-friendly event.
The second annual Salmon Science Expo will feature presentations from several organizations that work to protect wild salmon, including BC Wildlife Federation, Pacific Salmon Commission, Fraser Basin Council and the Hakai Juvenile Salmon Program from UBC.
The expo runs from noon to 4 p.m. and visitors will have the chance to learn how to test water quality and conduct experiments, examine salmon species and talk with salmon scientists.
This year was declared the International Year of the Salmonby Fisheries and Oceans Canada as a way to raise public awareness about salmon and the steps people can take to help protect the species, which the ministry calls “iconic” to coastal and inland waters in Pacific and Atlantic regions.
While 2019 is the focal year of the initiative, the year of the salmon is a five-year research and outreach program to help guide future DFO policy around salmon.
There will also be games, presentations, fishing history and salmon-themed films and art activities at the cannery’s Nov. 9 event.
Admission to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery will be free all day.
Guided tours and films will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
