Large power outage in Steveston caused by bird striking live wire

Photos on social media appear to show a power line sitting on top of a parked car on No. 1 Road in the village

A bird strike on a live power line caused a significant power outage in Steveston on Friday afternoon.

Photos on social media indicate that the wire on No. 1 Road, between Chatham and Moncton streets, had detached and fallen onto a parked car.

RCMP vehicles could be seen blocking off the section of the road, although it’s not clear if the wire was live at the time.

A spokesperson for BC Hydro told the Richmond News that the outage was "caused by a bird striking one of our wires at about 3:10 pm yesterday. All customers were restored by 6:50 pm.

"We remind customers that a downed wire is an emergency and should they come across one they should stay back 10 metres and call 911."

According to a post on Twitter by @StevestonShips, the wire was sitting on the roof of a silver SUV parked on No. 1 Road.

BC Hydro’s outage website indicated that the power went out for about 1,800 customers at around 3:10 p.m. due to a “bird on the wire.”

Crews reportedly restored the power at around 6:45 p.m.
