A physical altercation at a Richmond high school sent one person to the hospital last Wednesday.
Richmond RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) were called to Matthew McNair secondary shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 for a report of assault.
David Sadler, spokesperson for the Richmond School District, confirmed the altercation happened at the school and said school staff responded immediately and "contacted the parents of the students involved."
The Richmond News understands the incident involved a group of students from another school and one McNair student.
"This was an isolated incident, and as with all school-related matters, school administration directly addressed concerns at the school level," said Sadler.
He added the school remained open and the day continued as scheduled.
One ambulance with primary care paramedics responded to the scene and provided emergency medical treatment to one person who was then taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to BCEHS public information officer Rachelle Bown.
"The safety and well-being of students and staff remain the district’s highest priority. Schools have established protocols in place to respond to incidents, ensure appropriate follow-up, and maintain a safe learning environment for all," Sadler added.
No further information was provided by Richmond RCMP, citing privacy concerns.
One parent told the News no information has been shared with parents of McNair students regarding the incident nor the follow-up of safety actions the school is taking.
